Recover Photos That Are Shown Shaded In Grey Print

I thought that I could clean up and reduce my photo files by trashing each fie labeled "data" that followed each file name.( Example: One Pink Rose.jpg followed by One Pink Rose data file). I had edited the photos on file and figured that I did not need additional info. I think I goofed. Now I cannot open ANY of the photo files! I was using iPhoto with OS Jaguar.
