Reducing mailbox size

Hi:

I'm using Gmail. The corresponding mailbox on my HD (user-library-mail) is twice the size of my usage on the Gmail server (9.6 Gb vs 4.8 Gb).

How can I free some space on my hard disk?

You might want to choose Rebuild from the Mailbox menu and see if that helps at all. In Gmail, you might also want to reduce the number of mailboxes that are visible through IMAP on your Mac. For example, you might not need to subscribe to Spam if the latter's filtering is good enough that you don't need to cache its contents on your computer.
