i have had this problem, and i can't find a way around it. i have really gotten to like Mail for my email, but i find that its impossible for me to backup. if i copy it to another drive, and reinstall, i can't use it. i can't import from the program. i can't save all the emails and that import them back into Mail. i just can not do anything with it. if there were only maybe an in.toc file like in eudora i could access, but i obviously can't (unless there is in terminal?). anyways, i've tried a bunch of things.

i am one of those people who likes to keep alot of email, so that's why the backup is necessary.

thanks for the help.

Just backup the Mail folder located in ~/Library/ (~ is your home directory i.e.- your_username/Library/Mail). That holds all your settings, mailboxes, attachments and such.
At least that's how I've done it.
