Region Free DVD Drive?

I have recently bought a 1.25Ghz 15" G4 Powerbook w Combo Drive. The drive which is installed is the MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8122.
I am just wondering if it is region free? How can I find out?

If I understand it correctly, owaters, its the software running the dvd drive that has to be region-free. My guess would be something like http://www.videolan.org/ might remove such restrictions. I know in order for most dvd rippers to work, Apple's dvd player must be opened first to decrypt the dvd. And this would, presumably, be region-dependent.

If you're looking for a region-free dvd player, I'd look at the CyberHome models carried by Radioshack and others - if you google, you'll find the simple user-interface tricks to get around things.

I highly doubt that the DVD drive is region-free. The first time you use it, it may ask you to set a region -- and I believe this region can be changed up to 4 times after the initial setting, but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't think Apple sells any hardware with region-free DVD drives.
