Which Mac model are you using?
What version of OS X are you trying to install?
Does your Mac have a DVD reader, or just a CD-ROM drive?

You don't need the finder, or Disk Utility to reinstall OS X.
Have you tried a different OS X installer disk?

it's the new imac 27" flat screen with core i5, 4GB ram, boot rom version IM111.034.B00, OSX 10.6.3, it has the superdrive. the install disk is good my windows 7 will read it and show the files on it and it is the disk that came with the imac.

What happens when you restart your iMac, with the installer disk in the drive, restart while holding the Option key. You should be able to choose either your OS X system, or the installer DVD.
Do you also have a Boot Camp partition for your Windows 7? You would see that as a boot choice, too...
Does your install disk show up on that boot-picker screen?

Why do you think you need to reinstall? The reason I ask is that's seldom really necessary with OS X...

when i boot the mac and hold option i get the mac boot drive and the windows 7 boot drive , but not the dvd drive, i want to reinstall becouse finder does not work, and everything that i open on the mac freezes and i have to do a force quit, i am new to mac that's why i have windows 7 on it , so i can run the stuff that i need but that i can't do on the mac. am trying to do as much as i can on the mac so that i can get away from windows.

Do you have access to another Mac where you can try to boot to that installer DVD?
You can also use that other Mac to install OS X on your Mac. If you need some help with that, just come back here.

You said your Windows 7 sees that DVD... Is that then available on your Win7 partition when you are booted to Windows on your new Mac?
Can you then set it as startup disk from the Boot Camp control panel? If yes, can you restart from that point?

Next question - Did your OS X install stop working properly _after_ you set up your Windows partition?

Last question - what kind of software do you need, and believe you can't do in OS X? You may be mis-informed about that... Granted, some software has somewhat better performance on the Windows versions, but that works both ways..

hello , the boot camp control panel in windows 7 doesn't give the option to use the dvd for start up disk. OSX worked really good after i installed windows on it , i do remember that there was a folder in the trash , in OSX that was called recoverable files, and i deleted it . would that have anything to do with finder not working. have had no trouble with OSX or windows at all till now , have been runing both for about 2 months.will see if i can get my son to bring his mac laptop so i can use it . If i could get the finder to work then i don't think i would have to do a reinstall. osx will boot and i can get all the log files in console.also how long should i hold hold the c key when i boot with the install disk in the dvd, just so i know that i am waiting long enough. it seems that i get a white screen while still hold the c key for a while and the dvd drive stops working . then osx ejects the disk and boots osx and it starts up and again finder doesn't work.

This iMac has got to be very new; therefore you are under warranty. Have you called Apple or visited an Apple store?

In my mind, you have a defective Superdrive. Have you run Hardware test?

it's 4 month old , yes i am under warranty, but taking it in does not teach me anything about fixing it ,the next time something happens. I have built all of my own pc's, and i always try to learn as much as i can before i turn to the tech guys, that said i thank you all for the help i have got so far. my son is comming with his mac book so we will try remote install of osx today (sunday).

You have either a bad installer DVD (it happens), or the superdrive is bad.
It's nice to know that you want to try to fix it yourself, and learn something about the inside of your iMac. But, you would run the risk of taking your system out of warranty if you inadvertently damage something (which also happens), or, at the very least, opening up the display can leave dust/lint inside that beautiful big screen. You have to pull the glass off the front to open up your iMac, and that glass panel is very fragile when not installed in the iMac.
Leave the repair to the guys that are authorized to do it, at least while you are in warranty. They will get you going again.

yes your right , not going to open up the imac , i don't think that i want to go there. i call apple support today well my son was here , his mac book wouldn't read my install disk, so we couldn't do the remote install. bought a new install disk for $16 not a bad price at all. would be paying a lot more for a windows install disk. it will be here in a week, so will have to wait till then, to try the install. thanks for all your help , and will post back to let you know how it goes with the new disk.
