Does anyone know when Panther will be released? Cause I am waiting like mad to get it. Also, when I do get it, is anyone sure what I will need to run it?

No definite release date yet. Maybe in September, if not still before December for sure.

Probably runs nealy on all the machines that run 10.2 too. So tests (see fryke's posts and forum) show it runs smooth on a G3 iBook. :)

Thanks, what I own now isn't much but I don't want to buy a new Mac until I go to University. I have an iMac DV Model(1999) Slot-Loading DVD-ROM running Jaguar with 512MB of RAM. So yeah I hope this whole 64-Bit (G5) Processor isn't needed to run Panther. The thought just crossed my mind because Panther is also 64-Bit, so I was wondering if it could run on a G3 or even G4 because of our "32-Bit" System Architechture. Probably though. Thanks.

Panther isn't 64-bit...it's a 32-bit OS with 64-bit extensions that enable it to utilize the G5's "64-bit-ness"...that's why it's running on everyone's G3 and G4...It's just like 10.2.7.

Steve Jobs said 'before the end of 2003', so September - December 2003 is the release window.

From the beta builds' readmes, the requirements are exactly the same as for Jaguar. Practically no feature of Panther needs more oomph from your machine, instead, Panther will make it (feel) faster.

So: Your iMac DV will run Panther just fine, you can be sure of that. However, you might want to consider buying a new Mac, anyway, sometime next year, and that will have Panther preinstalled. So why shell out 129$, if you're going to buy a new iMac in March 2004? ;-)
