remote desktop question

I'm considering getting remote desktop to manage an xserve. Although it may sound silly, does remote desktop work across the internet? Someone told me that it is only for your local lan, and will not work on "remote" servers.

Can someone confirm this?

Yup, I use remote desktop to connect to my computer at home from work. Works a treat

Great thats what I wanted to hear. It makes no sense at all why you would be restricted to use it on local lan...
