Remove finder from the dock?

I believe there's a way to hack an app so that it's icon will not show up in the dock (or maybe make it a background app)... could the same hack not be applied to the Finder.app?

Oh oh, I know this one! Here let me look it up...

Okay, I can't find exactly what it is, but you have to change the XML tag "NSUIElement" to 0, or something like that. (Someone else with OS X booted up will probably be able to help you, but that's where to start...)

I found this thread about removing dock icons...

http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28070

Can only be applied to Cocoa apps, methinks. And I believe that the current 10.2 Finder is Carbon. Not sure. More insight, anybody?

EDIT: After reading through that huge thread, I believe THIS might be the solution:

EDIT NUMBER 2: I decided to download this app and make myself a guinea pig. I applied it to the Finder. I then logged out, then logged back in. My icons showed up on the desktop, however, I couldn't drag them around. Not only that, but I tried removing the Finder icon from the dock, and it simply refused to budge, and the contextual menu that popped up simply reported "Finder Not Running." So, then I reversed the hack, and logged back in. So far, the finder works again, and I can drag my icons around and everything, but now my Finder icon no longer has the "running app" triangle under it, and it still reports that it's "not running"... even though it's running fine.

So... yeah... this don't work on the Finder.

You may have 2 finders ? Or at least 2 applications/icons that you machine think is the finder.

Actually, I figured it out. Sort of.
Transparent Dock.
Nifty little prog that lets me change the colors of the dock, make it invisible, activate the hidden features, etc. I has this option to make the Finder removable from the dock, like permanent applications, only that you can remove it while it's running. Also, this thread, along with the one I posted about removing the alias arrow, was all because I'm trying to customize the gui to my tastes. I actually don't need this anymore, since I did some stuff with it and got it the way I like.

ph34r it.

The blurred parts are personal info like city, IP, AIM screen names, etc. Don't need people finding too much about me ;)

Nice screen setup, is that Apocalyptica? Good stuff, though the third album was a it disappointing. Is that two clocks in the upper right corner? One is 10 minutes ahead/behind :)

btw, transparent dock is a good app.

Yes, that is Apocalyptica. Good stuff

Actually, those aren't two clocks, one is how long Airport has been connected to the internet. Strange coincidence :D

That you don't know OS X quite as well as you thought maybe?

We understand why you might want to blur out parts of your screenshot, TuffNut. You don't need to explain, but thanks anyway.

Weren't you going to do something about removing the alias arrows?

Well, as you can see, I have aliases on the desktop. The symbol is a little annoying at times, but I don't like messing around with the system files too much. I was hoping that there was a program that could do it for me, but I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm happy with the way it looks now :)
