Repair Permissions

Hi. I noticed a reply regarding Security Updates from SatCure that asked if the viewer had 'repaired permissions' before and after downloading the updates. Is this a recommended procedure for all system updates or just Security updates or not a good idea......Thanks Dean M

You will get a few different opinions on this -- here's mine:
Installers change permissions of files/folders. If done right, they change them back, too. But about 50% aren't done right. That's why you need to repair permissions.

Suggestion (based only on experience):
01. Prior to installing any updates downloaded from Apple (recommended to be downloaded, not obtained via 'Apple, Software Update...' menu item or 'System Preferences' 'Software Update' utility) - boot from the provided / purchased installation disc - and via its 'Disk Utility' ...

01.01. 'Repair Disk' (perform once or twice).
01.02. 'Repair Disk Permissions' (perform once or twice).

02. Install the downloaded update(s).
03. Boot from the Mac's (updated) boot drive.
04. Launch (run, open) 'Disk Utility' and perform 'Repair Disk Permissions'.

That's really "belt and braces" ;)

I've found it sufficient just to "repair permissions" before and after, without resorting to the installation DVD - although I take your point, I've never had a problem doing it this way.

Yes, but when performing the "repair permissions" after installation, you should still reboot again. I personally don't repair permissions too often, though, and most certainly don't do the full thing at every update. It's just important to remember that if basically _any_ problem arises, to repair permissions and reboot should be your first stop.
