Replacing iBook Internal Drive

Hey guys, there are shops here in Japan that will remove your iBook or TiBook hard drive, adn replace it with another drive. So, for example I could send in my G3 iBook with a puny 20gig HD and have it sent back with a 80gig drive in it! Nice!

The Apple store doesn't do this though. Is this operation dangerous or anything? Has anyone ever done it? Is it not recommended for any reason? I am seriously considering it...

This is one of the best ad-ons you can do. I had an iBook Dual USB but upgraded to a PB G4 several years ago. On my second generation PB G4 Al 1 GHz. So you want to upgrade the hard drive....

The iBooks (you don't say what model you have) are not as easy to break into as the PB models as far as the disk drive is concerned. Having said that if your upgrader has experience doing this it is no big deal just time consuming and fiddling as dissassembly is required.

Have a look at this:

Also have a look at - http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
and look at their drive update database to see what other people's experience has been with hard drives.

Hitachi/IBM travelstar range is excellent (have had several myself). Just make sure you get 5400 RPM as a min and as much drive cache as the pocketbook can support. Also before you send the iBook away make sure you have a backup of all your essential data just in case.

Good luck :)

Viro changed his iBook disk as well and installed a 7200rpm one! Maybe he will come around and share some experiences on that. Viiiiiirooooo!

Thanks guys! I have a G3 iBook, 12".

I'll look into this and get it done for my xmas present to myself!
