resting system from .dmg

octane

I have issues, OK!
I've been trying to restore my iBook from a disc image [iBook.dmg] through the Disk Utility under the installation disc for Panther.

I plug in my Firewire drive, it mounts in the left-hand panel of Disk Utility.

I choose the disc image and then go through the options of restoring my mac with the image.

First I'm told there's a read error (60) when trying to read the image, then Disk Utility goes completely mad and the cd drive starts clunking and wheezing for ages until I have to do a forced restart.

The cd rom drive in my iBook is practically unused, so I just can't figure out what's going on...

Try running Disk Utility on the Firewire drive.

You could just install the OS on the iBook, then use the iBook's Disk Utility to open the disk image. Then copy the folders that you need.

I've had no end of problems with Disk Utility.

I mean come on! The idea of Disk Utility freezing and crashing is just madness beyond comprehension.

Getting Disk Utility to see the .dmg was hard enough, when I did get it to see it, the interface for loading the disk image in is a tragedy.

I've had errors galore, and then to top it all off, part way through writing the disk image to the newly formatted disk, the whole thing hangs.

AAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!..

There is a corrupt file somewhere on the .dmg - I suggest you use Disk Warrior or Drive 10.

Any reason why you are doing this verses installing a fresh OS?

Because it took me the best part of a week to install everything I use and need in the first place...

I would suggest you first do an install (saving user's data).
Then you do the restore.
