I copied my mail folders to a flashdrive last night to set them up on a new macbookpro. I thought I was doing this all correctly, though information on exporting email accounts, the mailboxes and so forth, doesn't appear to be easily found.
When I fired up the old computer this morning I saw the "welcome" screen to set up new email accounts!
I set up one of the five that existed and now I see the 30 separate mail folders that also existed but no emails.
In the Computer/Library/Mail folder I can find the folder of mailboxes and I see the POP account folders, and I see the mbox files and some plist files, but I don't know how to get any of this information back into the proper places.
