Hello All...

Well, what fun this has been. As a person with numerous machines and OS's on a home network, I have always found Retrospect to be quite the product. Although, with the release of 5.0, I had a few issues and wanted to clear up a few things for people.

1) Dantz has introduced a NEW version of Restrospect, splitting up Desktop/Workgroup. Basically, the Desktop version is the Workgroup version LIMITED. You can't enter an IP address for the machine you want to backup. This means that it must sit on the local subnet and can't be used across routers, over the Internet etc. On Dantz site, they charge $149 for the Desktop version and $499 for the Workgroup version, the only real difference is the ability to backup (1) Mac OS X Server, the ability to enter an IP address, and the included 20 client licenses.

I went off and purchased the Desktop version for $149, and the 5 client pack for $179... bring a total of around $330.00. Less than the $499 for the Workgroup version or is it.

I found out by reading the Dantz site the street price for Workgroup will be $299, and sure enough, MacWarehouse has it listed for $305. So, basically, I just got screwed, so I will be calling Dantz to get a refund, and will be the cheaper (higher end) version which will in the end, suite my needs better.

2) With the Desktop version, you are limited to as I mentioned earlier, looking for clients on the local subnet. Everyone has been saying (including Dantz) that you have to move the "Built-in Ethernet" to the top of your Network Prefs Panel for it to recognize the clients. This is NOT the case. They have a major bug it appears, and that is the fact that once you "disable" the airport card, it will immediately find the clients on the local network (over Ethernet) whether or not Ethernet is in the top position or the 3rd position.

I have always enjoyed Dantz product, but I feel really screwed on this whole pricing matter.
