return/enter key, enter doesn't work, but return does

I have an aluminum unibody MacBook running OS 10.6.8. The keyboard has the standard return/enter key, where the normal function is return and the function-key switches it to enter. Funny thing is, it works as a return key, but not as an enter key. Using the keyboard viewer, I can see that it's function switches correctly with the function key, but it only recognizes being depressed when the function key is not pressed, so it only works as a return key. I need a working enter key. Any suggestions, short of remapping a different key?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think shift-return is the combo I'm looking for. Using the keyboard viewer, the symbol on the return key changes to the 'enter' symbol when I press the function key. Pressing the shift key does not change the symbol on the return key in the keyboard viewer, and the shift-return combo does not activate the command for which 'enter' is listed as the keybinding. Any other ideas?

Hmmm...

What about Shift-Function-Enter?

Beyond that, I'm out of ideas. Can't find anything similar to this problem by consulting the oracle (Google), either.

Nope. I've tried every combination of command, option, control, and function keys. Only the function key changes the assignment of the return key to enter, and then pressing the 'enter' key doesn't register.
