return to login screen on idle

Is it possible to have OSX revert to the login screen during inactivity? I don't want to be logged out, I may have applications and documents open that I'm working on. Thing is, I have kids in the house with their own logins, if I go to make a cup of tea and then the phone rings, it would be nice if my work was "protected" but allowed other to login.

Is this making any sense?! Am I asking the impossible?

I would have thought this was a standard thing people want, but I don't see any way to make it happen in the system preferences.

Go to the Security pane in System Preferencess, and there will be an option to "Logout after xx minutes of inactivity".

Hi bobw

I don't want to forcibly logout as often I'll have open documents. I just want the computer returned to the multiple users login screen and simply require a password from me to carry on working in the same session, but allow other to login and do their own stuff if need be.

Can't have it both ways. To get to the logon screen, you have to log out.
You can under multiple users, you can switch to the login screen but are still logged in under the current session with all your open work files etc in place. I simply want this to happen after a certain amount of inactivity.

The 'require password' from screen savers just brings up a generic password box. What I do is turn on fast user switching and if I'm going to be away, I go the fast user menu and select Show Login... or whatever it says.

actually there is a "switch user" button under the password field after the screensaver requires a password - I'll see if my 3yr old can get her head around it tomorrow morning.
