Rhapsody on laptops

While everyones getting excited about 10.2, I'm still trying to get Rhapsody running on various laptops. Just wondering if we could compile a list of models that wil actually run it, as I just can't afford to shell out for a thinkpad. Compaq Armada 1700's seem to be out the window, but they run BeOS nicely.

The only display drivers I know of for Rhapsody on laptops are:
  • IBM ThinkPad 760E
  • IBM ThinkPad 760ED (this is the one I use)
  • IBM ThinkPad 560
You could try using OPENSTEP 4.2 drivers, but I wouldn't bet money on them (which is what you would be doing buy any other system than the one with actual Rhapsody drivers). OPENSTEP supported models include:

  • (system listed above plus)
  • IBM ThinkPad 755CX
  • IBM ThinkPad 760CD
  • NEC Versa E/V series
  • Compaq LTE Elite
The problem is that the drivers reflect one persons choice of laptop systems (that person being Steve Jobs) which limits the selection. This is the same problem that you would face trying to get Solaris for Intel to run on a laptop.

Currently ThinkPad 760ED systems are going for less than $200, but you are going to need an internal CD-ROM drive and an external floppy drive to do the install (Rhapsody require that both the CD and the floppy are in at the same time, OPENSTEP would let you boot and install drives from an internal floppy drive and then let you switch to and internal CD-ROM drive). My 760ED has been running great with Rhapsody DR2 (Rhapsody 5.1) for a few years now (and also OPENSTEP before that). My wife has been using that system when I have our PowerBook G3 running Mac OS X Server (Rhapsody 5.6) with me. She still likes to use 760ED (though she loves the 14" display on this one).

Thanks RacerX for that - most helpful. I have Rhapsody and OpenStep running on two Dell OptiPlex desktops at the moment. Runs quite nicely on a P166/128Mb. I'd just love to have a laptop with it also.

The 560's look quite nice :)
