Rotating Desktop pictures

I've got two computers running Jag: a 500 MHz G4 AGP with a Radeon 8500 and 1.25 Gig of RAM and dual monitors, and a 600 MHz iMac G3 with the original Rage 128 Pro and 512 Meg of RAM. Both machines' desktops are set to randomly change the desktop picture every five minutes. On the G4, which presumably is supporting Quartz Extreme, the desktop pictures smoothly fade into each other, but on the iMac, the dekstop abruptly changes from one picture to the next.

Does this mean that the cross-fading desktops is dependent on Quartz Extreme? Or is there something else going on here?
 
Quartz Extreme would probably the factor in the transitioning there... not 100% sure though, you might want a 2nd opinion...
