router troubles.

my linksys router fails to recognize that i've plugged my cable modem into the WAN port..

could this be due to the ISP having the MAC address cataloged from the computer it was previously plugged into?

Who is your cable modem provider? AT&T has always been plug-n-play with my Linksys.

Yes, it could be from the MAC address being catalogued from the previous computer. You can change the Linksys to emulate the old MAC address -- do you know how to do that?

router doesn't even light up signifing signals from cable modem.

and yes, my service provider is at&t broadband.

as to it being able to emulate the old comp's MAC address, already tryed that.. still fails to recognize modem.

already hard reset router..
would i have to go as far as resetting the modem? and how would i go about it?

what kind of cable modem? I have a toshiba something or other, and to reset it you unplug the coax and power for about 25 seconds... when i started using a router i needed to reset the thing to make it work too.

The error you are discribing isn't wouldn't have anything to do with your computer at all. You should be able to take your cable modem, not even have a computer hooked up to it, turn it on and it should sync up with the server. If it isn't syncing correctly it's more than likely something with the line coming in. Cable internet service has a very low tolerance between the frequencies that it can come in through and if something interrupts that it can cause some problems. From what you've done I'd say try calling AT&T and they should be able to take care of it for you.

problem however, is that unless i decide to take their cheesy networking solution package.. they refuse to support router-related questions.
