rtf file?

I am trying to look up my childs homework file from her school but my old iMac wont open the file...filename.rtf

Does anyone know what this is and how can I open it.

This is a Rich Text Format file, basically a Fancied-up text file. Try to open the file from File menu in most any word processor. I know it will open in either MS Word or Appleworks. Double-clicking on that file might not open the file directly
 
:) Thanks, That did the trick. Still a newcomer to computers. I'm glad that I don't have a windoze machine. Those things are so difficult to use.
