Running apps in the dock

Is there away of getting running app's to not minimize to the dock, but instead to a little tab on the upper bar and all under a single drop down? I use the window menu opition on my linux box using GNOME 2.4. It would just be nice if the dock was not always expanding. Thanks in advance for any help!!

In a word: no.

All GUI apps show up in the Dock AFAIK.

i think Fruitmenu does that.. Or whatever that app is named.

No, FruitMenu doesn't do that.
