Can anyone give me some information. I have recently bought a macbook pro 1.83ghz and am suffering some speed issues with office software. I have been told that this is due to this program not having been updated to run on intel processors.

does anyone have any information on when the update to this software will become available

cheers

Here's what Microsoft says:
Q. Will you re-release Office 2004 for Intel-based Macs?

A. No. There are no plans to re-release Office 2004. With Rosetta, Office 2004 runs well on Intel-based Macs.

Q. When will the next version of Office for Mac be available?

A. The next version of Office for Mac is under development, and we typically release a new version every two to three years. Although we are on track, making sure that our next version will run on the Intel-based Macs will likely require additional time in our development schedule. We will know more about our release date after we’ve thoroughly evaluated the Intel-based Macs, and have identified any changes we need to make so that Office for Mac runs smoothly on both PowerPC-based Macs and Intel-based Macs.

On a totally unrelated note - this is my 400th post, even.

Microsoft alternates its Windows and Mac releases of Office. The most recent release is Office 2004, a Mac version. We can expect the a new Windows version next. It will be called Office 2007. Office 2007 is currently in early beta. If Microsoft holds to form--and it usually does--Office 2007 will be released in 2007, but not early in 2007. This being the case, you can probably expect the next Mac version to be named Office 2008 and released in that year.

I use a 1.83 and Office runs as well as it did on a G4 Powerbook 1.33, I don't notice any real difference. You did upgrade beyond 512M of RAM didn't you? If not I suspect you need RAM. Rosetta forces apps to become memory hogs. If you don't have a Gig or more, try that because you'll be waiting a year or more otherwise.

You could go to Open Office or a variant of it, I suspect it will be Universal and free long before Microsoft gets there.

willibook1.42, welcome to MacOSX.com!

Yeah, more memory would likely help. Remember, you don't have to buy memory from Apple. Go to Crucial.com, Memorytogo.com, etc. and you can specify your machine. Your laptop uses different memory chips, I believe, than the Powerbooks. So look for your specific model. Buy as much memory as you can afford. It will help the emulated apps and everything else.

Here's another suggestion with Word: turn off live word count. Click on the "Word" menu at the top of the screen, click "Preferences" on that menu, and turn off live word count. It should speed up for you. Word is not the snappiest program in the world to begin with.

Also, I think Microsoft will be coming out with a Universal version in 2007. A Microsoft spokesperson said that they typically come out with a new version of Office every two or three years. 2004 +3 = 2007.

Good luck. Please let us know.
Doug
