Running OSX v10.4 Server on ??

Hello all,

I am currently looking at options for running my own server. I wish to stream live video to a URL and figure I should just invest in my own server rather than simply "renting" space from someone else. I believe I can get my hands on a copy of OSX v10.4 Server from the university and was wondering if I could run the software on an old G4 tower. Being NEW to running a server, I realize that I have alot to learn. I was hoping members of this community could lend some advice as to where I should begin.

I would like to host my own domain as well as webspace. With that webspace, I would like to attach the streaming video of a gallery space at my university. The viewer would be able to link to the streaming video at any time of the day and be able to access the gallery space via the internet.

Here is a really cool artist that is using a similiar setup to what I would like to achieve. I believe she is using Flash MX Server, as well as an accustic beam sound system. I am looking to simply accomplish the streaming video atm, the rest can come later. Check this artist out! Her work is really cool!

Her main site can be found at:

Anyways, thanks in advance for any advice or links you can feed me. I will be trying to get this server set up over the next month or so.

Hi -

Depends on how old of a tower and how much load you think the server will be under. You could always start it up on the older G4 and see if it fits your needs. I used to run District13 Computing on an 867MHz G4 up until Tiger. It now runs on a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz with 3GB of RAM. Even with a handful of websites served on it, with email and so forth, I don't notice it ever being overly taxed.

You may do pretty well on eBay looking for a DP PowerMac G4, Xserve G4 or any G5, if your current machine appears to lag a bit.
