Safari and Adium won't load, OS Freezing

For some reason, I don't know why it started, my Finder decided to start acting buggy yesterday. It froze up and so I right clicked it on the dock and relaunched it, but even after everything seemed to be back to normal, the dock wouldn't display (even when tabbing back and forth) any programs I had opened after Finder crashed, even though they ran fine otherwise. Right clicking Finder again would show it not responding and relaunching would do nothing. I killed it in Activity Manager, and it reloaded there fine, but the Dock was still broken in it's way. Adium also wouldn't reopen when I tried to relaunch it, crashing when it tried to start loading it's windows. Even a fresh install did nothing to remedy it.

So I rebooted the whole thing. Once everything was loaded back up, I noticed that Safari wasn't working either, and would just sit there like it had a bad connection but was still trying to load the page. Everything was acting slow as well.
I popped in my original OSX install disk and attempted to run a disk utility on my machine, but both times I tried to verify my hard disk it froze up completely and I had to do a hard restart.

I'm now using an alternate username on the same machine and for some reason Safari and Adium work fine. I haven't attempted a disk utility yet, but I'll report back when I can get more info.

TL;DR, Finder acted buggy, adium wouldn't load, rebooted, adium and safari not working, disk utility freezes computer on verification, alternate username on computer seems to work fine, so far.

Try creating a new user account, logging in under that new user account, and see if things return to normal. If so, this would indicate a problem specific to the old user account. If not, this would indicate a more system-wide problem.
