Safari crashes a lot under System Tiger

Hi,

Anyone know why Safari crashes so much under System Tiger? For the most part it crashes upon quitting, sometimes randomly, but always upon quitting Safari. I installed System Tiger to a virgin hard drive, then let the installer move my files over.

Applescript scripts no longer run under System Tiger's Safari.

Appreciate your insights and advice.
Thanks much,

Transitioning from System Panther to System Tiger.

Safari may crash on YOUR system, but Safari has not crashed for me since installing Tiger.
You could try out one of Tiger's new mini-features, where it can auto-reset your plist for Safari. If you get the 'application unexpectedly quit, do you want to report to Apple' window, click on Reopen, and use Safari. If you crash again after choosing to reopen, that same 'Report to Apple' window will now give you a choice to 'Clean Open', or Clean Launch (I'm not sure which), and that will restart Safari with a clean .plist, and give you the choice to save that, or keep the old one. Then you can try quitting Safari, checking to see if that has helped. So, Tiger has built-in refreshing of a crashing app's plist file. Works very nicely. Hope this can help you.
I'm not sure if this triggers on a failed 'Quit' but watch for it.

If you have any third-party add-ons, like PithHelmet, Saft, SafariNoTimeout, or AcidSearch, there's a good chance they're causing the problems. Downloading the latest updates should help.

But I find that even the latest version of PithHelmet makes Safari somewhat unstable. Not so much to make me stop using it, but enough to be annoying.

Actually, I found that using a simple CSS file to block ads, while isnt as good as Pithhelmet, still blocks enough to make me not bother using Pithhelmet and thus enjoy a more stable Safari. Maybe you should look into that.

Yeah, I actually use CSS blocking in addition to PithHelmet. For those who are interested in CSS blocking, check out http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2003/03/08/adblocking

But I still use PithHelmet to disable animated gifs (why, oh why did this option stop being a standard in every browser when OS X came along?), and I use its machete feature (which filters and transforms incoming pages) heavily on a few sites.

Hi DeltaMac, and others thanks for your replies,

It did let me do it once, but problem persisted.

I'm a Pithhelmet user, maybe that's it. Pithhelmet is more important than clicking off crashes when quitting Safari; maybe I could come up with an Applescript script to just click cancel for me when Safari crashes upon quitting. Seems "living with the problem" is preferable to doing without Pithhelmet.

Fortunately, I got Applescript to working by checking "enable GUI scripting."

Thanks much,

You can actually disable the "unexpectedly quit" dialog altogether with TinkerTool. Come to think of it, it's possible Safari is "unexpectedly" quitting every time I quit it, too....but I have the dialog disabled, so I'd never know the difference. :)

Safari also crashes when closing tabs (tabbed browsing).
Tried disabling all of Pithhelmets capabilities but problem persists.
Bummer.

High probability this is the cause.

Speed Download 2.3.5, and failure to upgrade it to 3.0.9 before running Safari.

Safari Help - Installed Plugins - Hmmm. Speed download listed.
Restarted between each of the below steps:
1. Removed everything Pithhelmet and SIMBL - crashes persisted
2. Uninstalled Speed Download 2.3.5 - no crashes
3. Installed Speed Download 3.0.9 - no crashes
4. Installed SIMBL , Duct Tape, and Pithhelment - no crashes.

Lesson learned: Suspect and upgrade every 3rd party Safari plug-in.

Thanks much :) , responders, for your help and advice throughout this message thread.
