Safari Crashes When Sending any attachments

I have just run into a new problem that I can't seem to fix. It just started a few days ago that anytime I try to send an attachment in an email, safari either crashes (when using gmail) or puts up a message when using hotmail (“POSIX error: Invalid argument) It's a real problem cause i am right in the middle of job hunting and am unable to send off resumes, coverletters, etc.

Somebody suggested opening up a new account and i did that and i could send email messages with attachments from the new account. Any idea of how i can fix my account with all my files and everything on it? Thanks in advance for any help!!!! :)

Mac OS X version 10.4.8
iBook G4

AARRGGGG!!! I hate stupid safari, I don't know how but somehow it has wiped all of my bookmarks and everything and one could hope that somehow at the end of it i might be able to send attachments, but i still can't. !!!!! Is it possible that I have a virus or something? Any help would be so lovely ;)

'Is it possible that I have a virus or something?' - yes. However, there are still zero MacOS X viruses ... 'in the wild'. Thus, you most likely do not have a virus.

There are apparently (supposedly) some 'proof of concept' vulnerabilities [1, 2] in the labs of Symantec, McAfee, and / or Intego, etc..

------

01. Log into your original account.
02. Make sure 'Safari' is not launched (opened, running).
03. Rename '~/Library/Safari/' 'Safari_'
04. Rename '~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist' 'com.apple.Safari.plist_'
05. Delete the '~/Library/Caches/Safari/' folder.
06. Turn OFF your Mac.
07. Wait (20+ seconds).
08. Turn ON your Mac.
09. Launch 'Safari'.
10. Attempt to e-Mail with an attachment, via 'GMail'

Any success?

'I hate stupid safari, I don't know how but somehow it has wiped all of my bookmarks and everything' - 'Safari' (generally) creates and edits bookmarks. It does not delete them.

Creating a new user (account), logging into the new user account, quitting the new user account, and logging into to another user account - does not delete the 'Safari' folder of files and folders of the other user account. The user however, can trash the 'Safari' folder, or delete it via 'Terminal'.

how exactly would i rename them? WHere do i go to rename them? i tried just deleting all the safari files, preferences, etc, but that didn't work...

That would basically do the same thing as renaming, except you can't recover the preference files if you've deleted them from the trash. Try creating a new account and use Safari on that (as barhar has said)

'Where do i go to rename them?' - the 'Safari' folder is in the ''~/Library/' (the Users' 'Library') folder.

'... how exactly would i rename them?' - click once on the file (com.apple.Safari.plist) or folder ('Safari') - the item will be 'selected', pause, click again - the name of the item will be 'highlighted'. You can now edit the items' name.

'i tried just deleting all the safari files, preferences, etc, but that didn't work...' - therefore, you do know the location of the respective file and folders.

There is no reason to delete the '~/Library/Safari/' folder - immediately; should the 'Bookmark.plist', 'History.plist', and other '~/Library/Safari/' files and folders not be the reason(s) for your problems.

As an alternative to renaming files and / or folders - drag the items to the 'Desktop'. Just make sure to note their origins.
