Safari only application that can connect.

Dear all,

I was wondering if there is anybody that would be able to help me, as I have a problem which is really starting to annoy me.

Safari is the only application on my MacBook Pro (bought about a year ago) that successfully uses the internet. All other applications fail to connect and give me an error of some kind.

The applications that have failed me so far are the following:
-Messenger for Mac
-Skype
-iTunes Store
-iMail
-iPhoto (Facebook photo exporter)
-Transmission
-Zattoo
-Software Update

Despite this, Safari works perfectly.

I've checked my firewall and the applications are in the 'allowed' list, and I've tried changing my 'location' in network settings, which had been recommended elsewhere, but nothing so far has worked.

I'm in student halls, so my internet connection is simply an ethernet cable plugged into the wall, so have no access to anything behind-the-scenes so say.

Everything worked fine before, and it was kind of sudden.

Any help that you could give me would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Do those applications work if you (temporarily) turn off your firewall(s)?

It could also be that the school is somehow blocking any traffic other than web traffic (port 80, which is why Safari works but nothing else does). That's a little draconian, but not out of the question. If they changed the settings one day, that would explain the suddenness of it.
