I want to actually download the files, and I know how to do this with firefox on the PC, but I can't seem to find where to go in safari to tell it to not play files in the browser.

You'll need QT pro for that.. You could find the location of the movie file (ex www.example.com/movie.mov), then create a simple webpage that links to that movie. Then, just control-click "save linked file".. or something like that.

You can force it to download straight from the address bar if you hold down Option while hitting Return, too. The same shortcuts apply to the address bar and links, e.g. holding down Command to open a new tab.
