Safari stops responding whenever I try to delete bookmarks using the editor

Can anyone tell me why Safari gives me the beachball of doom every time I try to delete a bookmark?

I'm on Mavericks.
 
Are you in Edit Bookmarks when you are deleting the bookmarks?
While in Safari, go to the Bookmarks menu and select Edit Bookmarks.
