Did you know that the little text area just to the right of the address bar is the Google search bar, and you can just type your search into that?

New tabs (Cmd-T) open up blank by default. If you have several "starting points" that you like to begin at, I suggest putting them on your bookmarks bar. You can then hold Cmd (Apple key) and click any of these bookmarks, and it'll open in a new tab. Eg: If you want a new "Amazon" tab, you'd hold Cmd and click on "Amazon" on the bookmark bar.
