Save Account Changes in Mail Preferences

Something that keeps bugging me is that whenever I make changes to an account in Mail preferences there's no way to immediately and explicitly save those changes. Instead, I have to click on another account (or another preference icon) and then click "Save" when the prompt appears.

Am I missing something? Is there no way to save changes before being prompted to do so? Command+s doesn't do it and that's the obvious choice.
