Save/Open file window...

something simple that has been annoying me for ages but haven't found a solution...

OSX's dialogue when opening or saving a file... the top drop down box never gives you a heirarchical directory listing. It would be preferred.

If you end up way down in the folder tree its hard to slide back up a number of directories(though command+left/right obviously does help).Selecting Home usually gives you the users home space, but weirdly sometimes gives you the Computer view(I think when you have other disks mounted).

So all very inconsistent... and annoying.

ideas?

The hierarchical listing is in the column view. It's very confusing. When I first started using OS X, I finally ended up putting an alias to my hard drive in my favorites, becuase (duh!) I didn't realize that I could slide to the left to access the root directory.

I really like what I've seen so far in the new Finder and save dialog.

Why not changing the view with those apple+1 or apple+2 and apple+3 combos?
this way I switch to the desired view and it works just fine for me. Sometimes I prefere column view.. so I switch to it with apple+3

have you made the open/save box wider? you can drag it out so you see a handful of columns at once.

ran across an app called Default Folder X.

Aside from its selling features of little side tabs on the Open/Save windows for Favourites etc, it seems to have made the drop-down folder list heirarchical...

Fixed...
