I have a G5 purchased in 2004, currently running OSX.3.9. I am using a View Sonic flat screen monitor, I have an Airport card installed and share a wireless network with my husband. He is the host I am the wireless.
About 2 months ago it started freezing, especially if I was on the internet. The freeze/crash have become more frequent. When this happens, the screen freezes with diagonal lines and I have to restart. or it freezes and a screen image of black and white horizontal lines comes on the screen along with the message telling me I have to restart. In addition, during this time I lost the use of Internet Connect and couldn't connect to wireless, though I could perform other functions on my hard drive.
I also had the problem of restarting and having no screen image at all (but start up sounds) until about the 4th restart. This problem got worse so I did a bit of research found a recommendation to fix it on Apple support. The recommendation was if I could hear start up sounds but had no video I might have a software corruption problem. They recommended first trying it hooked up to another monitor which I did and after several tries got screen images. They also recommended rebooted using the install disk on the other screen and was able to get an image but my internet still did not work. The solution was to back up hard disk data and Archive and Install. I also ran disk utility repair and permission repair.
These solutions seemed to solve the software problem as I had access to internet connect again and everything seemed fine. Then I couldn't use Safari. The icon bounces a few times but the program doesn't launch. And if I click on it more than twice my machine crashes.
I followed advice found on this web site to restore Safari recommended by Bobw-Mac Tech support, by deleting Safari preferences (com.apple.safari.plist) and caches and 3 other preference files and that didn't restore the program.
I can use internet explorer just fine, but I hate it. I would like to restore safari and the entire use of my computer.
This problem with the screen crashes seemed to get worse after installing ipod shuffle software which was new never opened, not a copy.
The problem is bad enough that my Mac is basically disabled and unable to function at the level one would expect of such a machine. Help please.
Thank you
Lisa B.
