this has probably been addressed, but i can't find a thread. i have a mac g4 (AGP) with an ATA hd, and a scsi hd (ibm dnes-318350, 17gb, scsi bus 0, ID=1). If i boot off of the OS9 partition of the ATA, i can see and use the scsi. if i boot off of the OSX partition of the ATA, i can't see the scsi, can't use it, and disk utility can't format it. the scsi hd isn't connected to any card mind you, and i don't know if i need an update, and if i do where can i find one? argh! any help would be appreciated.

How did you connect the SCSI drive without connecting it to a card? Macs haven't had native SCSI busses in them since the days of the beige computers.

OS X 10.3 dropped support for a lot of SCSI cards, including many Adaptec ones like the 2930 and 2940. How exactly is the SCSI drive connected to the computer?

If you have a G4 and a SCSI drive attached, it's attached to a PCI SCSI card. Which card do you have?

for pete's sake, i didn't even realize that it didn;t have an internal bus. but wouldn't it show up in the profiler if it was connected to a card? this isn't a home mac, i inherited it at work, so i didn;t build it. i'll crack it open and let you guys know. thanks for helping.

okay, so before i open the box, does this help?
profiler:
-int ATA 2 > id=0 (HD)
-int ATA 0 > id=0 (DVD-ROM)

- id=1 (HD)
-scsi bus 0
- id=4 (CD-Rom drive)

- slot a (AGP) > (Display card)
-PCI
- slot d scsi card (pci0cd, 2300, Ultra-wide)

and the verdict is: you were right, the damn thing is connected to a card. a "Grappler" scsi card. it's a 50-pin asb-3940uw-01, serial # aa54a914a835. so! i'm gona look up drivers for the card, if you have any advice i'd love to hear it.

I believe the Grappler is made by OrangeMicro, which is located here: http://www.orangemicro.com.

Here is a FAQ page from them concerning the Grappler:
http://www.orangemicro.com/grapplerfaqs.html

And here is a page with all their drivers for the Grappler line:
http://www.orangemicro.com/updatescsi.html

I would make absolute sure that it is an OrangeMicro card before going forth with any firmware updates from that page. I searched their pages extensively and found no mention of Panther or 10.3 compatibility, and I wanna say that this card is not supported under Panther, although I can't provide any links to back that idea up.

This is the page for Grappler upgrades;

http://www.orangemicro.com/updatescsi.html

Doesn't look like there's anything there that will help. You might want to think about getting a new SCSI card, or my choice, a new IDE hard drive to replace the SCSI drive.

Are the Grappler SCSI cards compatible with Mac OS X? SCSI Mac OS X support is available for the Grappler SCSI 906F, Grappler SCSI 930U and Grappler+ Serial boards. It is downloadable from the Software Updates page for Grappler SCSI products. Availability of full support for all types of peripherals may be dependent on appropriate OS X development documentation from Apple Computer. A timeline for Grappler SCSI 940UW and OrangeLink+ FireWire/SCSI PCI Board Mac OS X SCSI support is currently not available.
