Searching for a tool to determine the type of a video file

Hi,

i'm searching for a tool which determines the type of a video file.
Often i have some new Files ( *.mpg , *.mpeg) and i want to know what kind of video they are (Divx, Mpeg 1, Mpeg 4, ...).

Is there a tool which can do that ?

um, doesn't the quicktime info pane gives that information on the codec used? Is that what you mean?
 
Quicktime say's : opening of the file is not possible because there's is missing a needed softwarecomponent (i hope my translation from the german message to english is good enough).

I can play the video with vls , but the video is not correctly snchronized with the audio and the Play Back of the film is very lazy.

I'm using X.2.6, PB 867Mhz, 640 MB.
 
ffmpegX0.0.7c say's "unknown format" if i try to encode the video file :-(

But i can play the file with mplayer !?
 
can you place a link to the file or just its beginning (first 100kB) ? I shall try to find out what it is.
