Second Dock automatically killed

simX

Unofficial Mac Genius
I was just experimenting with using a second Dock... I was wondering if anybody knew how Apple makes sure that only one Dock runs. I copied the application out of the /System/Library/CoreServices folder, but every time I open it, it's automatically killed somehow. Is there any way to prevent this automatic killing?

stop working so hard sim! you might want to try this little haxie that was just released. it sounds like it does exactly what you are wanting to do.;)

I want TWO docks on the screen AT THE SAME TIME. I want to be able to have one Dock pinned to the left or right while I have the other pinned to the bottom. Or three, if I figure out how to do it.

That haxie allows you to SWITCH between dock configs. That's not what I want.

I like the Dock, but I just think having 2 docks up at one time would be even more useful. Of course, I'll never be able to get the functionality of being able to drag things between the two docks (that would be hella awesome), but at least I'd be able to use 2 at once.

i don't get why you want to do that. you can't click on more than one at a time anyway. what good would it do you?

ed, if we could have two or three docks open AT THE SAME TIME what would give us to opportunity to have one dock for apps, one for docs and one for various stuff.. I for one don't like messing up my dock with temporary stuff.. And I really don't want to bring up an app just to switch Docks..

I really hope that all of this "I wish you could" stuff gets fed back to Apple as they DO actually read them and especially with 10.1 stuff changed.

You may think "what can one guys opinion do?..."

but for each letter that repeats what another person said then that's a step towards Users dominating what goes in and out of the Mac OS.

I've sent loads or feedback forms. I bet the most requested bug-fix is the Internet Connect bug where your Mac sits there for 20 mins trying to remember if it left the gas on at home, THEN decides to connect to the internet and realises that its actually a SuperComputer, not a house wife!!!

Send those forms!

I've always wanted this as well. I always used folder tabs for my apps, but I had so many that I needed 4 or 5 of them. I would love to have a volumes dock as well (although I realize that volumes are not very recognizable without their names.) I'm sure apple would never do this. It goes against the simplicity of OSX. Maybe they just need to separate your active apps from your aliases?

i would love on dock for apps and one for folders/files.

that would be a great hack.

So maybe someone could answer my original question:

How is the second dock being killed? I successfully modified the Dock so it has a different name and a different process name, but it still is managing to get itself killed.

I prefer Dockswap. There are bloody loads of these utilities out there at the moment (3 have appeared in teh last 10 days or so)

I too would like a second dock, or at least some way of dividing the dock I currently have....

Does anybody know of a way to prevent an app from being killed unless killed by the kill -9 command?
