Segregating video memory?

Hi, I have a iMac G5 which works flawlessly, EXCEPT there are a few bad bits in part of the video memory. The result is that icons and pop-up windows have a herringbone pattern. Luckily most of VRAM is okay as the main screen is just fine.

The video is ATI 9600 128MB, so...

I'm wondering if there is a simple way to tweak OSX Tiger so it skips over, or reserves the bad part of VRAM. I'm assuming it's not needing all 128MB.

Any hints appreciated!

Nope, the user has no direct control over that. The memory controller is hardware-based on the actual graphics card itself, and the operating system (Mac OS X, in this case) has little -- if any -- control over that.

If there is truly a hardware fault here (bad VRAM, as you suspect), then it wouldn't be unheard of to get it fixed on the cheap... even if the system itself is outside of the warranty period. A firm but polite call to Apple (or multiple calls, if that's what it takes) has resulted in out-of-warranty repairs in more than one case.
