Server alias in dock doesn't work...sometimes

I've added alias' from my server connections at work and they seem to not work on occasion. I'm connecting to an NT server with Macintosh services installed on them. I also have an alias' for one of our other OSX workstations. It has the same issues as NT server. So I'm assuming it's got to be 10.3? Anyone have a workaround or a solution, heck, even an explanation.
 
I am having the same problem with an SMB share on network drives. I have not tried to make an alias to another mac drive.
 
I have tested a few times, and it always works the first time you use it....all further attempts after 'ejecting' the drive fail with a ? mark being placed over the dock icon...... any ideas?
