Server permissions issue

Hi

I've set up a basic 10.5 server installation. I then moved a large directory of current work from my local machine to an external HD attached to the server.

The problem:
All of the permissions are setup as they were on my local computer. I need to reset the permissions so the server can manage them correctly. I have tried to do this via "get info" on the containing folder, via the server tools and via disk utility, but I have still not managed to correct the problem.

I have not yet tried to change the permissions via terminal. I'm unsure what the correct permissions should be and how to chmod all the relevant files and folders at the same time

Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Perchance, if you do a "Get Info" on the external drive, under "Sharing & Permissions," do the permissions say "Ignore permissions on this drive?"

Thanks for replying.

No, it doesn't appear to. The permissions seem quite weird:

I'm currently logged in as the server admin and these are the permissions:

servername (Me) : custom
productiongroup: custom
workgroup : custom
servername (Me) : read & write
staff : read only
everyone : no access

As you can see the server admin is shown twice & I can't change "custom" to any other option. Just in case it's relevant, the drive in question is a 1TB external HD formatted as HFS+
