Service Battery Indicator On/MBP running VERY hot...HELP!

Hi all,

I own an earlier generation of the first Intel MacBook Pro (2.16 ghz). Lately, it has been getting VERY hot in a short period of time. I noticed the "service battery" indicator was on a couple months ago. I haven't thought much of it because it's rare that I use the MBP on battery power, as it mostly sits in my office plugged into the wall.

I do use my MBP for Photoshop and graphics work. Recently, it has started to freeze up and I suspect it's because of the heat. When it freezes, the cursor and any audio is all that will continue to function but everything else is frozen.

Is it possible that the excessive heat is being generated from the battery? If so, is it safe to use it plugged into the wall without the battery in place? A couple nights ago, I had it in my lap and the bottom got so hot that it was hard to handle.

Thanks for any help!

Chris
