Setting a default media player?

I would like to make it so all video files will open in Mplayer instead of quicktime. Is there a way to do this? I cannot seem to figure it out.

It depends on the video files. Some files you have to run in their respective players, as their formats are proprietary; this includes Windows Media files, Real files, and Quicktime files (.mov).

If you know a certain program is capable of running a certain file type, then control/right-click on a file of that type and select "Get Info." Click on the "Open with" triangle and select Mplayer, then click the button that will set all files of this type to open with Mplayer (it should be obvious which button it is, though I forget what it says). Then all movie files of that type (like MPG) will open in Mplayer. Do this for whichever movie files are compatible. This may take some trial and error to figure out what will run in Mplayer and what needs Quicktime, or even RealOne.

Ok thanks. I have noticed that Mplayer plays a majority of the files out there. It's a pretty compatible program!
