Setting default "everyone" permissions

PLEASE HELP!

I have a situation where any new file / folder I create in Finder has a default setting of Me (read/write), Stadd (Read Only) and Everyone (Read Only).

My problem is this. I recent began using a Western Digital My Book World Edition over my home network. Within a day I noticed an issue. Files I had copied to the External Hard Drive were either coming up with a red circled X or simply not allowing me to delete / edit them. And these were file I created with the same computer I was trying to access them with.

Not only that, but my wifes laptop is having the same access issues.

So what I want to do is set my default "Everyone" permission to Read/Write. This way I dont have to constantly change it on every new file that is made.

Is this possible? I don't know Unix/Linux at all. I tried changing the umask in the secrets pane as suggested by online forums and no luck. Tried changing the /etc/launchd.conf as well but didn't make a difference.

I am using a Snow Leopard upgrade one my laptop mentioned above and Leopard on my wifes.

HELP PLEASE!! What do I need to do to set the default on both machiens so we can access the files on the network storage without issue.

Thank you!

What partition scheme and format are set on the backup drive? Master boot record and FAT32, GUID and Mac OS extended (journaled) or Mac OS extended (journaled, case sensitive)?

Not sure. When viewing the get info it shows as Mac Server. Western Digital has it set to run as a server as soon as you hook it up to the router. It has its own access manager software built in but nothing in it allows for changing of default permissions. I believe I read the drive is programmed using Linux.

Im not concerned about the drive itself, but more so the permissions given to the file when they are created by a user. For some reason those permissions are kept when copied to the drive and prevents the other user of the drive not to make changes.

This is meant as simple file storage for my home so my wife an I can backup files or delete as we feel necessary. But one or the other get restricted because the default setting in SL write the "everyone" permission to Read Only.

If the backup drive is not formatted properly there will be issues like this. You can do a forum search and find other threads and 9 times out of 10 the formatting of the backup drive is causing the issues and from what you described about how your backup is set up thats probably whats happening.

yea that a godo question but this drive only lets you connect via network - not direct formatting is available. Thanks though :(

So you believe that even though all new files I create have the default permission of read only for everyone isn't the reason why there is an issue with altering files on the external?

Its just very odd that it keeps the same exact permissions from when I copy it. For instance I can change all permissions on a file to read/write and it stays that way when I copy it over. No harm no foul. But if anything is read only then both myself and my wife have trouble doing anything to it once its copied over to the external.
