setting users

hi men, I have another question for you:
I'm still building my network: I've installed macosx server on a power G4, I've installet macosx (not the server) on two ibooks and now the question is: I'would like to setup users on the server... how can I configure the two macosx clients to logon with credentials of the users of the server?

Thanks a lot and sorry for my stupid question... I'm a newbie

Do you mean you want the user's authentication information and home folders to be located on the G4? Like for example a Novell Netware system?

If that's what you want to do, I would advise against even considering this avenue: as soon as you disconnect your iBooks from your LAN you're lost...

If you just want to add users, go into Apple -> System Preferences -> Users and add them there.
If you want their login information to be the same on all machines, just make it the same when you configure them.

Is this because you are trying to figure out a way to centralize your file system across the 3 machines?

Does this answer your question at all? :p

the g4 server must contain informations about the users and if it's possible also home directories...
Why do you tell me "as soon as you disconnect your iBooks from your LAN you're lost... " Do you mean I can do nothing with my ibook? Can I configure local account for ibook?

michaelsanford -- note that Ahrbok has the Server version of OS X on his G4. NetInfo & OpenDirectory can indeed act as a network authentication center for all the 'children' on the network. This is typical of a corporate environment, but unusual in a SOHO or small workgroup setting, so you might not be familiar with the facilities available.

Here's a good primer on OpenDirectory:
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs...ory/Introduction/Open_Directory_Overview.html

And another for NetInfo:
http://www.apple.com/server/pdfs/UnderstandingUsingNetInfo.pdf

Both are essential documents for understanding OS X/Darwin's rather unique authentication facilities.

garotparrots, I did misread I thought he meant he installed mac os on a G4 to work as a server. And you're right, I don't know anything about OS X Server :p

It doesn't surprise me that you can configure an auth centre like that. But if the authentication information and, more importantly, the home folders are on the G4, won't they still be lost once the iBooks are disconnected from the network--or is it preserved somehow on the client machines?

Remember I don't know about OS X Server, so if you can do that, please correct me

hi men,
thanks a lot for your help... I have resolved all the problems;
I've created a user on the macosx server (on the power g4), I'have shared the home only for this user...
Than I hav created the same user on the client and via netinfo I modified the home path in <serverg4>/<shared>/user... and so I hav ethe user profile on the server.
In this situation I cannot work with the ibook if I'm offline: it 'a a trascurable problem since these machine will be always online.

Thanks a lot :)

Some ideas to share for all the clients the address book?
