sharing big files with XP

I'm running 10.3.9 on a powerbook G4 and must find a way to share big files with an XP user many miles away. I've downloaded MSN messenger, that doesn't work. yahoo messenger. same thing. Am I supposed to make a shared folder and add my friend's computer as a User. If so, what's the deal with naming it? must it concide exactly with something on his PC? If so, what then?

please help. these things have really started to hurt my head and make me feel like an idiot.

Why not make a simple web page with a link to the file (put both the HTML file and the "big" file into the "Sites" folder in your user folder), enable web sharing, then have your friend hit up the web page (when you turn on Web Sharing, you'll see the link(s) you need to use) and download.

Don't forget to use your public IP of your connection in the link(s) and forward port 80 (or stick your computer temporarily in the router's DMZ) if you're behind a router and/or firewall.

Or, use the built-in FTP server similarly and transfer the files over FTP. If you do this, you'll need to add another user that they will use when they connect (unless you want to let them use your account -- not recommended!) -- simply make a new user, then supply the downloader with the shortname and password of that user. Then, have them connect via FTP to your computer using that name and password, and share away.
