shutting off the display only on powerbook

I just recently migrated to the new 12" 1ghz powerbook and I'm trying find out how to shut off the lcd without putting the entire computer to sleep. From the keyboard, it would seem like command-f7 should turn off the display but it doesn't. Actually, command-f1 doesn't lower the brightness either so my recent reinstall of OS X might have done something to it. I hope somebody can help me because I might just migrate straight back to windows if this crucial feature isn't available. Right now, I'm making due with just changing the energy saver settings to turn off the display after a minute of inactivity.

What? F1 doesn't lower the brightness of the screen? This is a serious issue. I wouldn't know what to do without this feature! Esspecially during night...
Well, seems like your reinstall messed up a lot. I would rather consider a clean new install. Infact you should be able to turn off the screen-background with F1. No need to migrate back to windows! ;) Just make a fresh install

Welcome :)

Go to the Utilities folder and run Disk Utility. Have it repair permissions. Click verify then click repair.
Now give it a try.

Unfortunately, I tried both reinstalling and running disk repair and neither worked. Any other ideas? I'm beginning to think I might have received a defective laptop because in addition to this issue, the battery continues to show 99% despite that its fully charged. I had followed the instructions to run the battery till the computer goes to sleep (I turned off the energy saver and let it ran until it was about 5% power) then recharge it fully. The 100% lasts for a couple hours but then it reverts right back to 99%. Who would I contact about both of these issues? Apple tech support or Apple store (that's where I bought it from)?

You need to press ONLY the F1 key and NOT Command+F1 in order to lower the brightness... ;) If that will not work... Go straight to an Apple tech ASAP! :D

Go to back to Windows for this? Ouch! ;)

The thing about the battery is ok. Same here. Don't worry for that one. As long it goes down till 0 it's just fine...

btw, does the F1 work at all? Try keycombo such as alt+F1. If the "display preferences" starts, than the key is ok and you should consult help from apple

Thanks, I didn't realize that just pressing F1 will work. I guess the transition will be a lot harder than I thought. What happens if a program requires F1 though? Do I press fn-F1 to activate F1? Is there any place where I can the shortcuts for this?

Yup, for F1 you will need to press fn+F1.
As for shortcuts:
In panther there is one option in the system preferences keyboard (I believe), but never tried. And I think there must be some tools out for 10.2.x to make such shortcuts.
Since you are asking for shortcuts: take a look at launchbar. I love it!
