Sick to my stomach over losing data, can anyone help?

My PowerBook G4's hard disk is beyond repair (DiskWarrior won't fix the directory)...it won't boot. I talked with the Apple Store who kept it overnight running Diskwarrior, and they say that a program like Data Rescue X might be able to (but no guarantees) rescue the data.

Given I'm a poor, struggling student, I don't have 85.00 to throw around at will. Can anyone recommend anything to me...or help me out? I am willing to paypal :(

Anything you can do to help me would be incredibly awesome, EVERY part of my life from essays to my thesis was on that drive.

Not to sound like a jerk here, but this is exactly why you should backup your data. If it is so important to you, surely it is worth the extra hassle (and money) of backing up.

That said, I don't really have any help to offer. When you do get squared away I really hope you will consider some sort of backup solution.

You could send the hard drive to Drive Savers for data recovery. The $85 option will then seem like the bargain that it is. You always have a chance for recovery with software of some kind, but sometimes the hardware (the disk platter itself) is physically damaged, and software alone will be of no use, unfortunately. That would explain the 'no guarantees', but DataRescue may be your last option, other than calling it a complete loss.

You might want to try setting up the PowerBook as a second drive to another Mac. You can try using a Cross Over Cat5 Ethernet cable and see if the other Mac will bring up the book's hard drive.
OR use a firewire cable.
