Is site design an out of box type thing that was customized or from scratch. I only ask because I just realized that it looks a lot like the ars technica site (www.arstechnica.com)

vBulletin forum and community software has a default layout/design. the design can be skinned to look however. Look long enough, and you'll see a lot of vBulletin powered sites that look similar.
