Site Design

Dris

The Benevolent
Hey everyone...Just working on some possible designs for a website I'm developing. What do you think of this one?

http://dris.webhop.org/test.html

The guy in the background is my brother, not me. :p Anyways, I've tested it only in Safari, IE/Mac, and Netscape. Netscape was the only one with problems, and that was that the background color of the image is rendered way too dark for some reason. Anyone have an explanation? Thanks!

It looks really good to me. I've never really gotten into web design as much as I should, but since I will be launching a website very soon I have been paying a little more attention lately to the way sites are put together.

In fact, it's so good, I'd like to steal it. But then, I know I shouldn't. I just happen to like the way you've put the style together, particularly the headings, and would like to examine the code and see if I could adapt something similar for my webcomic's site.

There was a slight interface quirk when I point the mouse at the menu on the lower right, the box outlining the menu would flicker. (Using Safari v74)

stricly css huh. i like it. are your margins supposed to be like that? purple-blue overlapping the maroon text?

Thanks for the kind feedback!

Yep, it's all CSS. I was lucky...CSS2 came out in browsers just as I was learning about table-based layout. Glad I didn't get too into that, or there'd be some bad habits to break.

As far as the menu flickering, that's a little odd. I'm using Safari v73. The menu should fill in and have a complete border when the mouse hovers over it, but I haven't experienced the flickering...Strange...Maybe it's the new Safari beta? I doubt it, since it's just supposed to fix an SSL problem. But maybe. I don't know if I'm gonna keep the hover effect or not, so we'll see.

The overlapping margins are indeed intended, although some browsers don't get it right. Safari gets it, but so far IE/Mac doens't. It's kind of a subtle detail though, so I don't fret about it. As long as the red text stays above the blue stuff, it should appear as intended.

I really don't mind what you take from the design. There are a lot of variations you could do to make it look significantly different, especially changing the background image (I'm sure you don't want my brother adorning half of your webcomic's pages  ). You can also change the colors, borders, etc. But as long as you're learning something, it's fair game. ;)

Thanks again for the feedback!

Actually, Safari v73 was officially released as a public beta. Safari v74 came right after it, so you might have missed v73. I haven't upgraded due to laziness, and the fact that I don't find myself using SSL sites all that often.

I think your CSS usage is real good, real real good. This site is original. It's uncommon to have such use of layers and transparency, and this is what keeps me more than 10 secs on a site.

However (a compliment has to come with a reproach to be constructive, hm ?), I not a big fan of this hover-box you have bottom-right. I mean, the fact the box completes when you move mouse is not really needed, it's not quite nice IMHO.

The rest of the page is wicked.

Wow, thanks! I appreciate your compliments!

I agree with you on the hover box. I was just wondering what it'd look like, so I threw it in. It's been tentative since the beginning, and I was getting ready to scrap it when I got your email. :p
