Skype problems -hope I'm in the right forum

i've never had a problem with skype but downloaded the new 2.5.085 on sunday. Yesterday it just quit, claiming a p2p problem. I removed the old version and reinstalled the 1.5 version, still not working.
So I decided to dump everything and redownload again. However even though i have emptied trash and restarted macbook, the skype version shows up the minute I click to download the files, it is lurking in the system.

What can I do, I am seriously lost without skype and skype support could take 72 hours, anyway it sounds like a mac prob as firefox works just fine.

I notice too that something switches my google search and blogger to spanish or portuguese from time to time-do i have something buggy in here? if so how to clean it up?
also come to think of it, something fooling around with my settings in thunderbird too-can no longer receive email on one account. had to be changed on the server but this was new......

Any light most appreciated.

When ever I have problems with *any* app as you have described I get rid of the pref's forcing the app to reset.

Delete the com.skype.skype.plist from the library>preferences folder. When the app starts up again it will create a new plist.

Hope that helps

PS. Not sure 'bout the google language problem... you could learn Spanish =)

Wicky, thanks for that advice. After I deleted that file, Skype was still showing up as loaded on my computer, but it couldn't be found or opened. i only knew that when I tried to download skype again and the mac asked if it should replace the older file.
my skype logs in but is not connected.
another friend said his skype went out after he updated the software on mac. I realize this is the same thing that has happened to me.

I do speak Spanish -the google issue is not the problem persay! I only mentioned this as all of the problems I am having are internet related and wondered if they could be linked.

So I still need help desperately!
thanks cat

I've updated Skype (before the 10.4.9 update though) with no problems.

I'd try Appzapper, it's free for the first 5 deletes. For an inexperienced user it helps to find all the pieces of an App. You might have to search for some fragment of Skype if you can't reinstall any version.

So just get some version on disk, use Appzapper to remove it and then try a new install.

Here's what Appzapper tells me I have on my machine for Skype.

Thanks simbala.

I may try it. at this point, i am convinced that it is a problem from the mac update and something to do with p2p. however they fix that....?

although you could clarify something for me. I am converted from a pc and am used to routing around to make sure all related files are deleted. someone told me that the way to delete skype was just to delete it from the applications folder, clearly not enough. however when i searched for skype, nothing else was showing up except the skype crash report, yet clearly it was in there somewhere. i certainly don't have everything your zapper finds-is that normal?

how does one go about deleting files from the system normally? I also notice that a mozilla download i no longer want- blue organizer -will not completely delete either....

Usually just deleting the App from the Applications folder is enough. The few pieces left behind are small and of little consequence if you're removing the app completely. A new version will replace the other files in the case of an update.

But clearly, in many cases, there's a little more to an app than just what you'll find in the Applications folder. That's why Appzapper exists.

my skype logs in but is not connected.
What? Does it login and connect or _doesn't_ it login and connect? It's either or. Can't have one without the other. Could it be that it logs in, but because you've erased the preferences, you don't have any contacts listed anymore? I guess it starts with a clean slate if reinstalled that way.
