Slashdot-like alternative for shared hosting

I had an idea for a site with a similar format to Slashdot however I could do with finding an alternative to Slash. Unfortunately the slashcode "Slashalike" list is extremely out of date and most of the scripts on it either don't seem to be around anymore or still aren't suitable.

My development machine is running OSX 10.4 but I could do with a solution that's deployable on my hosting which is a shared server. I've got the usual PHP, MySQL, Python, Perl etc on both environments and my hosting even supports mod_perl, however I can't get shell access.

Therefore Slash, Scoop, Squishdot etc are out (unless the hosting guys can install it for me, which I've asked about) and anyway, while Slash would be ideal, it looks like a swine to install. I've played about with Drupal before so I gave it a go earlier, however it doesn't quite fit the bill.

Does anyone know of anything that's a clone of Slash, or pretty close, that will run on shared hosting? Thanks.
