Sleep and Sound problems with 10.1.2...

I just want to confirm that I'm not the only one with this problem...

After I updated 10.1 to 10.1.2 a couple of strange things have started happening.

First, when the machine goes to sleep for a period of time, typically about a half an hour or more, the audio quits working. The volume keys on the keyboard show that the volume is going up or down...but there's no sound. I get the same results from using the volume control in both the system prefs and the menu bar. Muting and muting has no effect either. This is a consistent problem on my home machine and my work machine (both new Quicksilver G4's).

Last, but not least. My modem on my machine at home doesn't consistently connect to my ISP. This is another thing that appears to happen after the machine has been asleep for a while. Upon waking the computer, if I try to connect, the modem connects, then immediately disconnects and I get a dialogue box telling me to check my settings. My settings are right of course, because the thing worked fine before it went to sleep! Also, I've noticed that if I'm online for a long period of time and have several things going on (Instant messaging, browsing the web, downloading a file) then my connection ceases altogether. I don't get any sign of a disconnect...the Internet Connect app still shows that I have a connection, there's just no incoming or outgoing traffic...I can even load a new page and go watch the Internet Connect app...there's no sign of a connection...and the page will attempt to load endlessly. But by all indications I still have a connection. Very strange.

Anyhow, I just wanted to see if these were common to the 10.1.2 update. That's when it all appears to have started and things seem to clear up great with a restart. Until there's a new update, I guess I just won't let my computer go to sleep:D

Not exactly. I have a different problem:

MY COMPUTER WILL NOT SLEEP ON ITS OWN! It is set to sleep after 20min or so (HD spin down, screen, sooner) but it doesn't do anything! If I close lid on PowerBook or select "Sleep" from menu, all is fine. But it won't do it on it's own! Anyone else??

I've got the same on my G4 450MP AGP running 10.1.2 It refuse to go into sleep at the time set in the Preference Panel, but has no problem when issue a sleep command from the Apple menu.

I wonder if the cause is one of our applications -- like Norton AntiVirus or something. Any ideas?

I haven't got Norton installed nor have I ever installed it. Must be something else. I'm also searching other forums for clues on this one.

Hmm...

I don't have any PCMCA cards and I have a laptop, so no PCI cards. Nothing third-party except firewire (which are not plug in!) and USB (printer [off], scanner) devices.

Hmmm....

i had the same problem with my machine not automatically going to sleep. i zapped the pr. all's well ^_^. give it a shot.

I did zap the pram and it didn't make a difference. I'll see if I can trouble shoot anything else. Anyone else with this prob using Palm's beta software? What about MS Office X?

Hmm..

(P.S. To zap pram, simply restart mac and hold down Command+Option+P+R until Mac "chimes" and it self-restarts. Usually, I hold it down AGAIN until it cycles a second time just to make sure the RAM space is cleared. In other words, hold down this key combo from startup through a couple of PRAM-purge "chimes" and then let go and let it boot up! :)

I did zap PRAM, but no change. I just discovered that I have the same problem if I boot up in OS 9.2.2

Automatic sleep was working fine until a few days ago....
On OS X Apple Support forum there is a thread about this, but no one has offered a solution yet.

Okay...I don't have a problem getting my machine to sleep...as posted above, it's the sound and my internet...anyways, I'm glad you guys have got your problem fixed:p

I don't think my problem is a software issue, as it started after the last OS X system update...any other ideas? or should we just wait for Apple to squash this bug...

I think that I may have found a possible culprit:

I notice that when I have certain USB devices (like Wacom tablet) installed, my PowerBook won't sleep on it's own -- it needs to be PUT into Sleep mode (then it will work fine). I think it's because certain USB devices keep being pinged by the Mac to make sure no "event" has occurred (i.e., Mouse/Tablet movement, etc.)

Another culprit is the "Wake For Network Administration" feature (I think) in the Energy Saver Pref Pane. If you UNCHECK it, it may solve your problem. If you keep Entourage X running, for example, and have it check for NEW mail every 10-20 minutes (like I do) it may prevent the Mac from ever sleeping on its own (because of the mail "event"). Try disabling the Wake feature.

Anyone else have a thought?

After getting my dual 1G G4 Tower, I was sore disappointed to have the sound off after sleep problem, not only in 10.1.2, but 10.1.3 and 10.1.4. After doing all the trouble shooting I could think of, I called Apple - I bought the AppleCare plan.

Making a long story short, after talking to six regular techs and four "product specialists, reformatting the HD, etc., etc., etc., the fourth product specialist found AppleCare Knowledge Base article #106751. which reveals Apple knew of the problem and hadn't fixed it through two updates!

Thankfully, it appears 10.1.5 fixes the problem. Maybe now we can all stop having to reboot after sleep if we want sound!
:)
